Lacrosse Battles, Falls 26-11 at Mercer

MACON, Ga. – All good things end, and unfortunately for Longwood lacrosse, the team’s five game winning streak came to an end at Mercer on Saturday morning.
 
The Bears (8-5, 5-0 Big South) used seven points apiece from Gabby DeVirgilio and Caroline Glus to outlast Longwood (7-7, 4-1 Big South) 26-11 thanks to a big third quarter. Kendra DeFelippo scored a career best three goals for her first collegiate hat trick, and Holly Hill added two goals and three assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
The two sides were neck and neck for most of the first half. Defense reigned supreme in the first quarter, and DeFelippo had Longwood’s lone goal as the Lancers trailed 3-1 after a quarter.
 
Longwood erupted in the second to tie things up. Four different players scored, with Hill capping the run with a goal to make it 5-5.
 
After Abby Soltys scored for Mercer, Hill answered with her second goal of the match for a 6-6 tie.
 
DeFelippo ripped home her 11th goal of the season to give Longwood its first lead of the game, 7-6. The Bears answered with three straight goals to take a 9-7 lead at the break.
 
After halftime, DeVirgilio got going for Mercer in the third quarter. She had four goals, and Mercer pushed the lead to double digits.
 
From that point on, Longwood battled, but Mercer held the Lancers at bay.
 
UP NEXT:
 
Longwood returns home to host Furman on Wednesday. Opening draw is set for 6 p.m., and the match will air on ESPN+.
